Jacob Bates, Graduate Intern

My mental health journey started at a young age and has continued to grow and evolve throughout my life. No matter where my path has taken me, I have consistently found myself drawn back to the mental health field because of my passion for helping others. I am currently pursuing my Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Saint Joseph’s University and am excited to be completing my internship at Counseling Associates of Delaware.

I believe that communication, connection, and self-understanding are the  foundation of meaningful growth and healing. Therapy provides a safe  space to explore challenges, build insight, and develop practical tools for  navigating life’s difficulties. I also recognize the value of holistic wellness  and encourage clients to incorporate activities such as exercise, spending  time outdoors, mindfulness, and other restorative practices into their lives.

I enjoy working with adolescents and adults experiencing anxiety,  depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and related disorders. I  have a particular interest in helping individuals struggling with OCD and  anxiety-related conditions through evidence-based approaches, including  Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). ERP is considered the gold standard treatment for OCD and helps individuals gradually face feared  thoughts, situations, or uncertainties while reducing compulsive behaviors  and avoidance patterns. Through this process, clients learn that they can  tolerate discomfort, build resilience, and reclaim areas of life that OCD has  restricted.

My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and goal-oriented. I strive to  help clients better understand their experiences while developing practical  skills that empower them to move toward the life they want to live. I will  graduate from my master’s program in May and look forward to continuing  my work with individuals facing anxiety, OCD, depression, and related  challenges.
